New Jersey STEM Month

March is New Jersey STEM Month. The goal, according to the state’s Department of Education, is “to celebrate New Jersey’s commitment to student success in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs. And whether it’s Citizen Science and the Innovation Classroom at Westfield High School, a Science Olympiad at the intermediate level, elementary afterschool STEM clubs or a robust K-12 curriculum, there is no shortage of STEM learning in Westfield Public Schools.

WHS Wind Ensemble to Perform in National Concert

The Westfield High School Wind Ensemble departs on March 13 for Indianapolis, Indiana to take part in the Music For All National Concert Band Festival. The group received an invitation in July after undergoing a very selective application process last spring. WHS is only the fifth high school from New Jersey to receive an invitation in the festival’s 28-year history. They will join schools from 24 other states and territories, spanning from Hawaii to Puerto Rico. The Wind Ensemble performance will take place at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 14. SEL - Relationship Skills

In this final segment of the district's TED-style Talks on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), Franklin School principal Dr. Eileen Cambria and assistant principal Dr. Paul Duncan examine "Relationship Skills," an important part of what our students are learning from the moment they begin preschool and/or kindergarten. As students grow, the district's approach to this 5th SEL Competency is adapted to help them develop and sustain healthy relationships with greater independence. Teaching children positive relationship skills will help them at home, at school and throughout their lives.

Youth Art Month

The Westfield Public Schools are celebrating the nationally acclaimed Youth Art Month with colorful and creative displays throughout the downtown area. Paintings, drawings, and sculpture designed by approximately 330 students from Westfield’s ten public schools are displayed by 39 downtown merchants as well as The Westfield Memorial Library and RMC Studios in Garwood, who volunteered their window or display space for the month of March.

SEL - Responsible Decision Making

Every day, we ask our students to problem solve, whether it's a word problem in math, determining primary versus secondary sources in social studies, or some other academic riddle. Yet we also expect our students to solve problems and make choices that can have a profound impact on the social and emotional well-being of themselves and others. Westfield Robotics Finishes Season on a High Note

Westfield Robotics concluded its season on February 17 with its most successful results of the year. The team, WR That Hertz, competed in the semifinals of the FIRST Tech Challenge New Jersey Competition and was chosen as a partner team by the third highest scoring team. In the best out of three matches to move to the finals, That Hertz and its partner battled it out for all three matches. While That Hertz did not make it into the finals leading into the state championships, the team is immensely proud of all the progress made this season.

Solar Savings

At Westfield High School, the amount of clean energy generated by solar panels installed on the roof equals the amount of CO2 emissions avoided by a family sedan driven 422,326 miles.  The solar panels installed at Edison Intermediate School have generated enough energy to date to provide electricity to 40 homes for one year. Just a few of the recent statistics provided by an online overview of the positive environmental impact of the district's solar panels installed on five solar-capable schools.
